Cartagena prepares its beaches in the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor for this summer with an investment of 1.5 million euros, one of the largest amounts in recent years. The Coastal Councilor, Gonzalo López, has reported that the City Council has renewed 70% of the furniture for this summer season. This was made possible by the increase in the annual budget by 400,000 euros.
The renovation of 50 foot washers, walkways, open-use shade pergolas, benches, trash cans, changing rooms, and bathrooms has also involved a reorganization of their locations. This aims to improve accessibility to bathing areas and provide greater comfort to bathers. In this regard, a rearrangement of parking spaces and a greater number of shaded pergolas on the beaches have been carried out.

There are also floating dock spas in Los Nietos, Playa Honda, and Playa del Cavanna in La Manga. Additionally, the equipment at the bathing assistance points for people with disabilities has been renovated, with adapted foot washers, amphibious chairs, therapeutic floaters… These points operate until August 31 and are located at the beach of San Ginés in La Azohía (already in operation); Playa Honda and Puerto Bello in La Manga (both operational from July 1). Virtually all beaches with surveillance have lending material for adapted bathing.

BLUE FLAGS AND TOURISM QUALITY Q

The work of the City Council has resulted in three new recognitions at the beaches: two new Blue Flags at Cala del Barco and Playa de Calblanque, and a new Quality Q at Puerto Bello. Cartagena is the municipality in the region with the most Blue Flags, with a total of 10 on beaches and ports. These are complemented by Tourism Quality Q badges. The distinctions recognize the services provided by the beaches as well as the good control of the waters. It is also worth noting that the municipality opens three dog-friendly beaches at La Calera de Isla Plana, Le Lengua de Vaca in Los Nietos, and the beach area between Los Alemanes and Playa Paraíso.

INCREASED DAILY MAINTENANCE IN SUMMER

Councilor Gonzalo López has stated that beach adaptation work will be completed this week, but will continue daily throughout the summer. Among the notable improvements for the summer is the hiring of an external company to reinforce the night service of sand smoothing and screening in the Mar Menor, with special attention to Los Urrutias, Los Nietos, Islas Menores, Mar de Cristal, Playa Honda, and Playa Paraíso. Additionally, new tools have been acquired to make the work of municipal tractors more effective in areas like La Manga.

Special attention is also given to environmental care. Therefore, all municipal coastal workers have received specific training for sustainable management of the beaches, with a special focus on the preservation of the flora and fauna of the Mar Menor. They have learned how to act in case of animals appearing on the shore, identification of invasive species, management of sediments, and cleaning of the beaches in accordance with the natural environment.

The municipal funds allocated to beach maintenance amount to around a million euros. The rest of the budget, about half a million, is dedicated to materials and furniture. The actions carried out on each of the beaches are detailed in the attached images to the news. Among the most relevant investments are:
