The City Council of Cartagena, hand in hand with i-DE, the distributor company of the Iberdrola group, highlights the latest improvements in the electrical network of the coastal area of the municipality. During the first semester of 2025, an investment of over 700,000 euros has been made in various actions aimed at strengthening and modernizing the electrical supply in La Manga del Mar Menor and Cabo de Palos.

This action, resulting from public-private collaboration, aims to ensure a safer, more efficient, and sustainable service, especially in areas with high tourist influx during the summer period.

Among the improvements made, the modernization of several transformer stations stands out —including the one located next to Peke Park in La Manga and the one in the Barracones area in Cabo de Palos— through the installation of automation technology that allows remote operation, streamlining response to incidents and reducing intervention times.

To avoid interruptions during the works, temporary generator sets have been installed, allowing the improvements to be carried out without affecting users.

One of the most relevant actions has been the undergrounding of over a kilometer of overhead line and the removal of 16 electrical supports in the vicinity of the Salinas de Marchamalo, a protected natural area of the Mar Menor. This intervention, in addition to improving the service, contributes to the integration of the landscape and environment of the infrastructures.

A new underground medium voltage line of approximately 2.5 kilometers is also being built, connecting several transformer stations, as well as a new sectioning center equipped with advanced automation systems, which will increase the network’s management capacity and reliability.

For the second half of the year, a new investment of around 800,000 euros is planned, aimed at continuing the renovation and reinforcement of the electrical network in other locations of the municipality, in line with the commitment of the City Council to guarantee more modern and sustainable energy infrastructures for all Cartagena residents.
