Navantia is planning to celebrate the launching ceremony of the S-82 ‘Narciso Monturiol’ submarine, the second of the four S-80 class submarines ordered by the Navy from the company, on July 21 at its shipyards in Cartagena, as reported by military sources.
The launching is a traditional event in naval construction that marks the first time the submarine is put into the water. The ceremony signifies the beginning of the submarine’s sea trials and the culmination of a significant stage in the construction of a naval unit.
An important part of the ceremony is the sponsorship of the vessel. Military sources reveal that the sponsor of the S-82 ‘Narciso Monturiol’ will be Isabel, the wife of the Chief of the Defense Staff (JEMAD), Admiral General Teodoro Esteban López Calderón.
LEONOR WAS THE SPONSOR OF THE S-81
The launching ceremony of the S-81 ‘Isaac Peral’ submarine, designed and built entirely in Spain, took place on April 22, 2021, presided over by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. The Princess of Asturias, Leonor, sponsored the vessel.
The ‘Isaac Peral’ successfully passed the operational qualification process it had undergone to evaluate its ability to operate in the missions for which it was designed earlier this month. It has already been integrated into the Dédalo Expeditionary Combat Group and will participate in weapons launch exercises, along with the rest of the surface units.
The ‘Isaac Peral’ has already launched a torpedo with a payload against a target for the first time in an exercise in May, and the Navy indicates that it will be fully operational in July.
