The Local Government Board of the Cartagena City Council has approved on Thursday, May 8th, the project for the comprehensive recovery of the emblematic Casa Rubio de El Algar, which will be completely rehabilitated to become a new public space dedicated to social, cultural, and neighborhood activities.

The project includes a complete intervention valued at 803,092.70 euros, VAT included, partially financed with European funds, which «the city council has obtained thanks to the quality of the project and the great heritage value of the building, which has allowed us to obtain this European aid to carry out a complete rehabilitation that, otherwise, would have been impossible to carry out in its entirety,» stated the mayor, Noelia Arroyo.

The works will start soon and are expected to be completed within a twelve-month period, and for its design, «the voice of the residents of El Algar has been taken into account, who have actively participated with their ideas and suggestions to define a project that turns Casa Rubio into a meeting place and cultural dynamization center of the municipality,» highlighted Arroyo.

Among the interventions are the structural consolidation of the building, restoration of facades respecting their historical value, comprehensive renewal of electrical and air conditioning installations, and substantial improvements in energy efficiency. Special emphasis will also be placed on universal accessibility, with the installation of specific equipment to facilitate use for people with reduced mobility.

Once recovered, Casa Rubio will be a multi-purpose space for workshops, exhibitions, cultural activities, and neighborhood gatherings, following the requests of local groups and associations to contribute to the social and cultural dynamization of El Algar.

The project has a total financing of approximately 2.5 million euros, coming from Next Generation European funds, contributions from the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and municipal resources.

The project was awarded to the Temporary Business Union (UTE) Casa Rubio CSL-Salmer, with an estimated period of 18 months: 4 months for the project drafting and 14 months for the execution of the works.

The Casa Rubio, built in 1895 by a mining entrepreneur, is one of the most prominent urban palace houses in the municipal area. Its rehabilitation responds to a historical demand from the residents of El Algar and is part of a broader plan for the revitalization of the area, which also includes the improvement of the drinking water supply network in several streets in the vicinity.

This project is part of the Public Building Rehabilitation Promotion Program (PIREP) that the Cartagena City Council attended to fulfill a historical demand from the residents of El Algar.
