The mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, has requested reports from all municipal services with the aim of «updating and strengthening the protocols for prevention and intervention in future emergency situations,» according to municipal sources in a statement.
Arroyo emphasized that this «unprecedented and complex» experience has provided a «valuable opportunity» to analyze municipal procedures in detail and identify possible weaknesses, «it has allowed us to learn and will allow us to improve.»
In this regard, the municipal authority has stated that the «commitment» of the City Council is to «continue working to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents of Cartagena,» highlighting the «great work and quick response» of the municipal emergency services, Social Services, Local Police, and Firefighters.
In her statements, she highlighted the «fundamental coordination» of these bodies with the National Police, the Civil Guard, and the Autonomous Community to meet the needs of the population, hospitals, and residences, as well as to manage traffic during the twelve hours that the supply was cut off.
The City Council explained that the activation of Level 2 of the Territorial Civil Protection Plan of the Cartagena City Council «proved to be a key measure for a coordinated and effective management» of the situation, and real-time monitoring of incidents was carried out from the Security Park, as well as support actions to ensure energy supply to healthcare centers not only in Cartagena but also in other parts of the Region.
Another aspect highlighted by the City Council was the «rapid adaptation» of the Sports Palace as a non-healthcare attention and overnight center, equipped with personnel and generators, and the «exemplary deployment,» doubling personnel to regulate traffic in the absence of traffic lights, which, according to the mayor, prevented any serious accidents.
Their coordination with the Civil Guard and the National Police reinforced security throughout the municipality, covering both the urban area and the neighborhoods and districts.
Finally, Arroyo emphasized the «great professionalism» of the Firefighters in responding to numerous elevator rescues and providing assistance to people with reduced mobility, and especially their «quick intervention» in the fire declared in a warehouse in the Cabezo Beaza industrial estate during the early hours, managing to extinguish it without any injuries occurring.
