Cartagena has actively participated in the international meeting of the European project HeatSafe, focused on preparing for extreme heatwaves in Mediterranean cities. The event, held on June 24 and 25, brought together municipalities and entities from Spain, Greece, Bulgaria, Italy, and Albania.

During the meeting, the main lines of action of the project were defined, with special attention to the creation of local action plans, the identification of vulnerable areas through heat maps, the design of adaptive solutions, and citizen involvement. Cartagena, along with other cities like Barcelona, Arezzo, or Durres, will develop a local action plan against extreme heat, based on scientific evidence and multisectoral collaboration.

Among the planned actions for Cartagena is the transformation of an urban park in a vulnerable area into a space adapted to heat, with shade, vegetation, and water points for both people and animals. Additionally, work will be done on developing protocols for responding to heat alerts, with the aim of protecting the most exposed populations, such as the elderly, children, and homeless individuals.

The project also includes the creation of a digital decision support tool and a catalog of climate solutions applicable at the local level, as well as a network of seasonal and portable climate shelters.

Lastly, there will be campaigns for awareness and training, as well as neighborhood solidarity networks to act during episodes of extreme heat. Cartagena will actively participate in validating innovative measures, technical training, and disseminating best practices at the Euro-Mediterranean level.
