Cartagena commemorated this Wednesday the Day of the Book with a chained reading dedicated to the writer Carmen Martín Gaite on the centenary of her birth, as reported by municipal sources in a statement.
This event, entitled ‘Voices for …’, included in the AbrirLibro program of the Cartagena City Council, had the participation of representatives from the 40 reading clubs of the Municipal Library Network, accompanied by the Councilor for Culture, Ignacio Jáudenes, and municipal technicians.
Jáudenes highlighted the importance of Martín Gaite’s work, who was the first woman to win the National Literature Prize in 1978. «She is a leading figure in 20th-century literature,» emphasized the councilor, highlighting the commitment to promoting reading carried out by the Library Network clubs.
During the event, held at the Faculty of Business Sciences of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), the former CIM, attendees performed excerpts from some of the author’s most well-known works, such as ‘The Back Room’, ‘At Times’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood in Manhattan’, or ‘Variable Cloudiness’.
Music was also present during the activity thanks to the performance of the Aventis wind quintet.
ACTIVITIES UNTIL APRIL 30
The Doña Centenito library, at the Ramón Alonso Luzzy cultural center, as well as those in the neighborhoods and districts, will host various literary, musical, puppet, or ‘escape room’ workshops until April 30.
All activities are free, and registrations can now be made on the website ‘www.bibliotecas.cartagena.es’. Most activities have already sold out.
Theater will also be present in the program with a twist on one of the most universal literary classics. ‘Another Quijote+?’, promoted by the City Council and the Institute of Cultural Industries and Arts (ICA), tells the story of Don Quixote through the countless blows he receives throughout his adventure.
It can be seen this Thursday at the Luzzy, starting at 8:00 p.m. Tickets available at ‘www.cultura.cartagena.es’.
Another proposal for this Thursday at the Ramón Alonso Luzzy cultural center will be the ‘Human Library’, where different people «will become books to tell us their story, breaking stereotypes and prejudices.» The activity has the collaboration of social entities such as La Huertecica, Ápices, or Astrade.
On April 26, throughout the morning, there will be family activities in the square adjacent to the Luzzy, such as the show ‘Welcome & Sorry’, and the awards of the VIII Bookmark Contest will be presented, dedicated in this edition to the writer Julio Verne.
The Luzzy will also be the venue for other activities that require prior registration, such as the micro-story workshop ‘Few Words Are Enough’, to be held on April 29 at 6:30 p.m.
The program also includes the 13th Literary Encounter of Authors in Cartagena (ELACT), which will take place from April 24 to 26 at the Roman Theater Museum, with free admission, subject to capacity.
The full program of activities promoted by the Municipal Library Network is available on the website ‘www.bibliotecas.cartagena.es’.
