The Cartagena City Council organized a large celebration on Saturday, May 17, in honor of the International Day of Families, which was attended by the mayor, Noelia Arroyo, who wanted to join this morning of gathering and camaraderie that was attended by over 400 families.

From early in the morning, Los Juncos Park was filled with families thanks to the wide range of activities designed for all ages, in a day that «seeks to recognize the importance of the family unit in society and reaffirm our commitment to continue working for their well-being,» acknowledged the mayor, who was accompanied by the councilor for Social Policy, Families, and Equality, Cristina Mora.

Arroyo recalled that the municipal effort to support families «is carried out throughout the year with specific measures such as free childcare centers or birth assistance benefits throughout the municipal area.»

«Today is indeed a special day, a celebration, but our work to promote reconciliation and support all families, including those with special or different needs, is ongoing,» emphasized the municipal authority, who was able to greet families and municipal volunteers, as well as the coach of Jimbee Cartagena, Duda, player Tomaz, and the team manager, who generated great excitement among attendees who did not want to miss the opportunity to take photos and ask for autographs from the team members, after winning the bronze in the Futsal Champions League.

The day featured a mobile disco, slime workshops, artistic makeup, origami, and traditional games like giant parcheesi games. Given the great reception of this event, which had the involvement of the Childhood and Adolescence Unit of the City Council, «next year we will undoubtedly repeat the celebration and add more activities, especially those designed to be enjoyed as a family, which is what the attendees have requested,» assured Cristina Mora, who described the event as a success.

Support for families in the municipality

The City Council approved in its latest Government Board meeting the procedures to extend the Summer Schools program to the months of June and July, which enable the reconciliation of family and parental life for parents of children with disabilities.

Protecting families, in fact, is a central part of the municipal social policies in this term, demonstrating the commitment of the government team to strengthen the family unit and provide resources that alleviate economic burdens and promote the integral development of children.

In this regard, the Department of Social Policy, Equality, and Family has a budget of 200,000 euros for assistance of 200 euros for the birth of the first child, 250 euros for the second child, and 300 euros for the third. Another action framed in reconciliation policies is to establish free childcare centers, which will take effect in the next academic year 2025-2026.
