The mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, has met with Daniel Tugues, the new CEO for Spain of Veolia, the parent company of Hidrogea, to review the investments close to 70 million euros that the City Council is making through the concessionaire company to modernize and expand the comprehensive water cycle through investments in digitalization, network improvement, and advanced control systems.

Arroyo emphasized that the investments currently underway amount to 18.5 million euros, including key projects such as CARTADi (Cartagena Digital Water), which has a global investment close to 15 million euros, of which more than 8 million come from the Spanish Government’s Water PERTE. This project will enable the installation of 60,000 smart meters and strengthen cybersecurity and digitalization of the supply and sanitation network.

The mayor also recalled that Cartagena has one of the most efficient supply networks in Spain, thanks to hydraulic technical performance, which minimizes water losses and optimizes its use. In this context, she emphasized that investments in digitalization will result in a substantial improvement in the control and security of the entire system.

Furthermore, Arroyo highlighted the actions carried out within the framework of the Mar Menor Environmental Recovery Plan, funded by European funds through the MITECO, with over twenty interventions carried out worth 3.5 million euros in areas such as Mar de Cristal, Los Urrutias, and La Palma, with new actions of similar value planned.

The hydraulic investment plan planned by the Cartagena City Council and managed by Hidrogea until 2042 amounts to a total of 74 million euros, of which 45.5 million will be developed in the coming years mainly for extending services in dispersed areas, maintenance and flood prevention, as well as the expansion of essential infrastructures for the municipality.

Daniel Tugues, on his part, highlighted that Cartagena is a municipality that is «at the forefront technologically, with many innovations being deployed,» while also emphasizing the good integration with the local population, with projects that go beyond water, «such as the recovery of Casa Dorda, which is also a milestone in heritage recovery, which combines with this service and gives this image of integrated quality service to the community, which is what we want to convey.»

The new CEO of Veolia also stated that the Dinapsis center, located in Cartagena, represents a significant advancement in the digital transformation of the comprehensive water cycle and environmental health, managing networks that supply more than 500,000 inhabitants in the region and applying cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, IoT, Big Data, and digital twins.

Daniel Tugues, who takes on the role of General Manager of Veolia Spain with extensive international experience in the water and sustainability sector, has expressed his commitment to the development of innovative and sustainable projects that bring long-term value to Cartagena and its citizens.
