The I International Congress Europe Educates: Educational Innovation as the Axis of the European Future has served to underline the transformative, technological, and educational vocation of Cartagena, as a driving force for progress in the European context, according to Mayor Noelia Arroyo, who inaugurated it alongside the Universities Counselor, the UPCT Rector, and other university representatives from the EU and the Spanish Courts.

The congress, organized by the University of Murcia, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, and the ISEN University Center, brings together experts and professionals from all over Europe for several days to address the educational challenges of the 21st century. An interinstitutional collaboration that, in the words of the mayor, «demonstrates that cooperation is the key to successfully addressing the great challenges of our time.»

Arroyo recalled that Cartagena has historically been a pioneer in education in Spain, highlighting that the first Graduated Schools in the country were created in 1903, and a century ago the Bazán Technical School was established, the precursor of the current Vocational Training and dual training model. Now Cartagena contributes leading startups in the application of new technologies in education.

«The choice of Cartagena as the venue for this congress is not accidental. We are a city with a long academic tradition and with major projects focused on the future. An ancient city, not outdated,» she stated.

In addition to its educational role, the mayor emphasized the relevance of Cartagena as a strategic hub in the construction of the European future, highlighting that from the city, key axes for the development of the continent are being articulated.

On one hand, she pointed out that Cartagena plays a fundamental role in the European defense sector, hosting infrastructures associated with cutting-edge technology and innovation applied to security, essential elements for Europe’s strategic autonomy.

At the same time, she highlighted the decisive commitment to energy transition, with projects such as the promotion of green hydrogen in the Escombreras Valley, positioning the city as a reference in sustainability and clean energy.

In the educational and technological field, Arroyo highlighted how companies born in Cartagena, such as BeMyVega —working for accessibility in classrooms— and Odilo —present in over 50 countries with a digital learning ecosystem— are revolutionizing training models globally. «We demonstrate that Cartagena not only is part of the European project, but we are driving it through innovation, education, and sustainability.

The mayor emphasized the strategic value of Vocational Training in Cartagena, which offers solid and quality job opportunities, training young people in «digital, technological, and practical skills that are exactly what the new European production model demands.»

For Noelia Arroyo, the congress should be «the germ of a new space for international cooperation in the educational field,» emphasizing that «Cartagena has the talent, the history, the innovation, and the will.»
