Cartagena joins in the commemoration of World Autism Awareness Day this Wednesday, April 2. The mayor Noelia Arroyo has visited the headquarters that Autismo Somos Todos has open next to the Jose Hierro boulevard in the historic center. There, she has reported that the City Council collaborates in the development of these individuals with socio-sanitary support and vocational training according to the needs requested by local associations.

Thus, Mayor Noelia Arroyo has pointed out that «from the Government, we are making a great effort for Cartagena to be an accessible and friendly city for people with any type of disability.» And she has stated that «we are aware that these are people who contribute a lot to society. And in the case of people with autism spectrum disorder, they deserve the opportunity to work and be part of our companies.»

To promote their employability, the mayor has indicated that both the City Council of Cartagena and the Employment and Training Service of the Region offer courses in different areas, so that people with autism have tools to achieve an opportunity in the job market.

On the other hand, the mayor has encouraged all residents of Cartagena to participate in the solidarity march that will take place on May 11. It is a large hiking route, also open to pets, through the historic center. It will raise awareness for people within the autism spectrum, but also raise funds and resources for all projects aimed at improving their lives, both in childhood and adulthood. More information about this 5-kilometer route that will depart at 10:00 a.m. from the Town Hall square can be found on the Línea de Salida website.

MANIFESTO IN THE TOWN HALL SQUARE

Cartagena has joined the commemoration of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. A manifesto was read in the Town Hall square at noon and tonight the submarine roundabout on Paseo Alfonso XIII will be lit up in blue.

We Are Infinite is the theme of this 2025 campaign. Thus, it is remembered that no two people with autism are alike. Each autistic person is unique, with their own needs, abilities, and interests. Therefore, each one needs specialized and adapted support based on their personal situation and life stage.

In Spain, it is estimated that 1 in 100 people is on the autism spectrum, which means hundreds of thousands of people with diverse realities and needs. However, despite this significant presence in our society, knowledge about autism and recognition of their rights are still inadequate.

Entities specialized in autism work every day to offer specific and specialized services that promote their well-being, development, and social participation, but alone, we cannot. It is essential for administrations to commit to ensuring stable and sufficient funding for these services, promoting their sustainability and continuous improvement.
