The cases of child abuse in the Region of Murcia have experienced a slight decrease during the first quarter of the year. The Child Abuse Prevention and Care Program directed by the Ministry of Social Policy, Families, and Equality shows a 5 percent decrease compared to 2024, going from 302 cases in the first quarter of 2024 to 286 children assisted in the same period of 2025.
The report prepared by the General Directorate of Families, Childhood, and Conciliation reveals that 46 percent of the cases involve victims of neglect violence and 29 percent emotional abuse. In the first case, it refers to forms of child abuse that are less visible socially but indicate potential risk situations. «Indicators such as lack of hygiene, early school absenteeism, malnutrition, fatigue, permanent apathy, or children who avoid going home, among other aspects, may be behind neglect violence,» explained the General Director of Families, Childhood, and Conciliation, María Luisa Lozano.
On the occasion of the International Day against Child Violence, celebrated today, the regional government highlights the importance of the detection, notification, and registration program, which the Community has been developing since 2003 with the aim of preventing abuse in children and adolescents and raising awareness and training professionals related to minors and the family environment.
So far, 9,945 professionals have been trained as social notifying agents to identify and make visible any indicators of violence in minors. Among them, personnel from the healthcare and educational fields, law enforcement agencies, and social services. Third Sector entities also join this initiative as detectors of potential risk situations.
The General Director explained that «thanks to this collaborative work, the identification of abuse indicators improves and encourages systematic reporting, even in mild suspicions, allowing for quicker action and prevention of serious child violence situations.» In the first quarter of 2025, the highest number of notifications comes from the educational field, followed by law enforcement agencies.
Regarding the gender of the children assisted, the majority of reported cases correspond to males, with 50.35 percent. Girls, on the other hand, account for 49.65 percent of the reports. The age range is mainly between 16 and 17 years old.
