The Cartagena City Council has completed the project of monumental lighting of Cerro del Molinete, an initiative that enhances the historical and archaeological value of this emblematic site and enhances its tourist appeal, with an investment of 274,217 euros, improving the nighttime visibility of the site without compromising its conservation. According to the mayor, Noelia Arroyo, «this archaeological park gathers traces from all of Cartagena’s history, from antiquity, and the lighting system is designed to help us better understand all that history,» highlighted the mayor.

From the Roman sanctuary to the mill-hermitage, passing through the Carlos I wall, each element of the heritage has lighting specifically studied. «The project goes beyond illuminating monuments, what we have intended is to better tell the story of Cartagena and create itineraries that allow for nighttime tourist visits,» stated Arroyo.

The new lighting, which uses low-consumption LED technology, has been adapted to the terrain characteristics and the conservation needs of the site, allowing to highlight the archaeological richness of Molinete in a respectful manner towards the environment.

The control system will allow tour guides to create unique experiences. «The guides accompanying our visitors will be able to do so through a new marked route with beacons, and they will also have a device that will allow them to illuminate each monument as they progress on their visit,» explained Arroyo, who also pointed out that «the lighting not only enhances the most emblematic points of the park, but also improves the safety and enjoyment of the residents, expanding the illuminated areas in passage areas.» The guided nighttime visits under the name ‘More than a hill: Molinete through the centuries’ have begun, and registration is open.

The Molinete project is the second major monumental lighting project undertaken in recent years, following the one carried out by the City Council at the Concepción Castle, in Torres Park, inaugurated in July 2021 with the aim of improving the nighttime perception of this emblematic monument in Cartagena’s urban profile.

The intervention consisted of the installation of 14 specific LED projectors for monumental lighting, designed to highlight the architecture of the castle, particularly its Homage Tower. These projectors allow for efficient and programmable lighting, adapting to different local events and festivities, while contributing to energy savings. Thanks to this action, the castle is more prominently integrated into the city’s nighttime image, reinforcing its historical importance and tourist appeal.
