The Cartagena City Council has installed a new automated external defibrillator (AED) at the IES San Isidoro de Los Dolores, as part of the council’s «commitment» to «guaranteeing an accessible and effective cardiac protection network for all citizens,» according to municipal sources.
At an event held at the educational center, the Training Councillor, Álvaro Valdés, highlighted, along with the Education Councillor, Ignacio Jáudenes, that 170 defibrillators have already been deployed throughout the municipality, with a dozen installed in vehicles of the Local Police.
«Cartagena continues to grow as a Cardioprotected City. This pioneering and unique strategy in Spain not only saves lives but also reinforces the safety and peace of mind of our residents,» said Valdés, who thanked the work of the official Antonio Pastor, program coordinator.
The IES San Isidoro has been selected for its special needs. With over 950 students, the center participates in the school alert program and has students with heart pathologies.
Its director, Ángeles Martínez, emphasized the importance of this equipment. «Although we have never had an emergency, it was vital to have this immediate resource. Now we are more at ease, not only for our educational community but also for the Los Dolores neighborhood, where there was no defibrillator nearby,» she said.
The school nurse, Ana Taurís, highlighted that this advancement is the result of networking and continuous training. «Every year we train students and teachers with simulators. Now, with a real AED, we gain in safety. It is an easy-to-use device that anyone can handle by following the instructions. The important thing is to lose the fear and be prepared,» she commented.
On the other hand, Antonio Pastor Clemente, municipal doctor and coordinator of the ‘Cartagena, Cardioprotected City’ program, recalled that Cartagena has been nationally recognized with the award from the Spanish Cardioprotected City Council.
«The most important thing is to have an AED nearby. There is nothing that reverses a cardiac arrest like a defibrillator. On our municipal website, anyone can consult a map with the exact location, photos, and availability schedules of each one,» the doctor added.
