The Cartagena City Council, through the Department of Social Policy and the Barrio Peral Health Center, has launched the initiative “Caring for the Caregiver”, within the framework of the Sociosanitary Coordination and Social Intervention Network in the community scope, to strengthen the role of non-professional caregivers and articulate support networks in Barrio Peral and the Barriada José María de La Puerta.

The councilor for Citizen Participation and Seniors, Francisca Martínez, has highlighted the importance of this interinstitutional collaboration, «it is a clear example of how joint work can generate a real and positive impact on the lives of our neighbors.»
�
According to the councilor, «caring for those who care is essential, especially in summer, when the lack of support can intensify physical and emotional fatigue,» so the City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to the health and well-being of Cartagena families, «offering tools and resources so that no one feels alone in this important care task,» she added.
�
The “Caring for the Caregiver” program is carried out at the new Barrio Peral Health Center, implementing a comprehensive response to the identified needs related to physical, mental, and emotional health, and the quality of life of caregivers of chronic patients in situations of dependency.

These sessions are designed to offer practical tools that allow caregivers to perform their tasks in a healthier and more sustainable way, as well as increase their caregiving skills.
�
The Sociosanitary Coordination Network, with its participatory and interdisciplinary approach, reflects the council’s commitment to improving the quality of life of the municipality’s residents.

New initiatives

In addition to this resource, the City Council will launch new workshops addressing topics such as healthy eating, physical exercise, health and well-being, crafts, care, emotional self-management, as well as cultural and intergenerational exchanges.

Furthermore, psychologists from Cartagena Social Services Center I will provide psychological support sessions in preparation for childbirth and postpartum groups, as well as in perinatal grief.
