The mayor announces that this summer the asbestos removal works will begin in the first schools, with a total expenditure of 1.3 million for five centers.
On Monday, July 14, 2025, the mayor, Noelia Arroyo, revealed that a total of 12 schools in the municipality will undergo improvements this summer, with works financed directly by the City Council of Cartagena. A sum of 360,965 euros will be allocated to actions such as improving sports courts, bathrooms, accessibility, waterproofing, and window replacement, so that «when children return after the holidays, they can find their school environment improved.» The mayor made this announcement during a visit to the CEIP Beethoven in Nueva Cartagena, one of the centers with the highest investment this summer, with over 70,000 euros in renovation works on the sports court, windows, and structural improvements that have already begun. Some of these actions are funded by the regional government.
During her tour of the center, accompanied by the school’s head of studies, Mª Jesús Diestro Manzano; the president of the AMPA, Estefanía Box; the president of the neighborhood association, Antonio Molina; and the councilor of Education, Ignacio Júdees, Mayor Arroyo emphasized that «this school also participates in participatory budgets, so every year improvements are also carried out within that budget that the schools themselves decide where to invest.»
The head of studies of the center expressed gratitude that the works are being carried out during the summer period, «so as not to disrupt the normal functioning of the center,» and highlighted that the students «will greatly enjoy the new sports court because it is one of the needs that they have been requesting for many years, so it will be a spectacle, it will be great.»
In addition to the works done on the sports court of CEIP Beethoven, other notable actions include improvements on sports courts in schools like Mastia, San Ginés de la Jara – Llano del Beal, and San Francisco Javier in Los Barreros; bathroom renovations in José María de la Puerta, Concepción Arenal, and Virgen de Begoña; waterproofing repairs in Primitiva López; improvement of accessibility and paving in Gabriela Mistral; and construction of an access ramp in the School of Early Childhood Education Jardines.
Furthermore, the City Council allocates an additional 83,770.80 euros for the maintenance and basic supply of all educational centers.
The mayor also took the opportunity to mention that in addition to the improvement works carried out during the holiday periods of Christmas, Easter, and summer, this year marks the beginning of the new contract for the maintenance of educational centers launched by the City Council, with an annual budget of 1.1 million euros, representing a 41% increase compared to the previous contract of 780,000 euros. The contract includes the care of the tree mass in the courtyards to provide shade and the renovation of school sports courts.
All the actions and works carried out this summer, as well as those done during Christmas and Easter, are coordinated with the school management teams, municipal technicians, and the AMPAS of the different centers, emphasized Arroyo, highlighting that «the investment and planning we make in our schools is a sign of our commitment to quality education and comfortable and safe environments for our students.»
