The City Council of Cartagena and the Regional Federation of Metal Entrepreneurs of Murcia (FREMM) continue to collaborate to advance the materialization of the future Industrial Training Center of Cartagena, with the aim of becoming a national reference center for its level of specialization.

During the meeting between the mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, and the president of FREMM, Alfonso Hernndez, after the construction permit was granted by the city council, both parties highlighted the importance of this strategic project, which will position Cartagena at the forefront of technical and specialized training at the national level.

«Few centers in Spain will have the quality, level, and future orientation that this center in Cartagena will have. It will be crucial for training in sectors such as green hydrogen, naval, nautical, and all industries in transformation,» emphasized the mayor.

The center will be located in the Industrial Estate of Los Camachos, on land provided by the City Council, and is expected to be fully operational, according to the forecasts of the business federation, by the 2027 academic year, following an estimated investment of five million euros.

«It is a historic day for Cartagena. The City Council has expedited the complex licensing process in record time. Thanks to this, we will be able to lay the first stone before the end of the year,» stated the president of FREMM.

Hernndez confirmed that private funding is secured, while public funding will be channeled through the recently reached regional budget agreement.

Institutional Commitment

During the meeting, attended also by the president of COEC, Ana Correa, the general secretary and vice president of FREMM, Andrs Snchez and Toms Martnez, respectively, and the councilor for Training and Employment, lvaro Valds, the «public-private collaboration as the project’s driving force» was emphasized, as expressed by Correa at the end of the meeting.

The mayor recalled that Cartagena is the main industrial hub within the Industrial Plan of the Region of Murcia and that the lack of qualified technical profiles is one of the main challenges to consolidate new investments. «Cartagena has a future, but in order for that future to be real, we need to train those who will build it. This center is a key piece in that mission,» she concluded.

FREMM, on its part, reaffirmed its commitment to the established timeline and ensured that not a single day has been lost in advancing the preparations. With the permit already granted and institutional support in progress, the project of the Industrial Training Center of Cartagena is already on track to becoming a transformative reality.

Training for the Employment of the Future

The center will have 1,500 training positions and will train around 3,000 students annually in nearly 30 industrial specialties. Between 500 and 600 courses will be offered each year aimed at unemployed individuals, with a job placement rate exceeding 80%, which could result in the creation of 300 to 400 direct jobs each year.

In addition, the City Council will have 1,200 annual hours for training activities through the Local Development and Employment Agency and other municipal programs.

«Companies demand qualified labor. This center is a direct, effective, and strategic response for Cartagena, the region, and the province,» added the mayor.

One of the most innovative spaces in the center will be a specialized practical classroom in green hydrogen generation, the first of its kind in Spain, allowing students to manipulate real equipment and train in emerging technologies with immediate industrial applications.
