The Ministry of Culture has awarded and formalized the contract for the drafting of the Master Plan for the set of historic coastal defense batteries of the Cartagena bay, which «represents a significant advance in the city’s strategy for the recovery of military heritage.» The award has been granted to the UTE Jos Manuel Chacn-Arquitectura de Barrio, for 177,308.30 euros.

The mayor, Noelia Arroyo, has emphasized that this Plan «comes at a crucial moment, as we are also developing the recovery of the San Leandro battery on the Cala Cortina path, which will become an interpretation center for the defensive system.»

Furthermore, she has pointed out that this event occurs «a few months after we had the opportunity to hand over to the Minister of Culture the updated catalog with the entire list of batteries of the defensive system of Cartagena and the permitted uses resulting from the work we did from the Cartagena City Council with Cartagena Puerto de Culturas.»

«One of our priorities is to recover military defensive heritage, give it a use, protect it, and do the same with other batteries of state ownership, those coming from the Ministry of Defense, those also managed by the Ministry of Ecological Transition or others of private ownership,» she stressed.

The municipal project for the recovery of the defensive system, now supported by the drafting of this Plan, also aligns with the transnational project that, together with other Mediterranean sites, seeks UNESCO’s recognition for the military defensive heritage of the Mediterranean, to which Cartagena contributes one of the most complete with over 400 elements, perfectly identified in the catalog that the mayor handed over to the minister last November with the intention that he could collaborate in identifying the best uses for them, which will be one of the objectives of the Plan that has just been awarded.

In this regard, the mayor has reiterated that «we will recover our military and defensive heritage, just as we will do with the musealization of the Tonina submarine, which is one of the elements we want to recover and enhance by creating a space dedicated to the submarine weapon.»
