The number of unemployed people in Cartagena has decreased by 440 people compared to the previous month, which represents a 3.5% decrease. Since January, unemployment has decreased by 955 people, with a cumulative drop of 7.3% in the first half of the year. And in year-on-year terms, the decrease has been 5.4%.

These data place Cartagena above the regional and national averages. In the Region of Murcia, unemployment decreased by 2.0% in June and 5.07% compared to the same month of the previous year, while in Spain as a whole the declines were 2.0% and 6.06%, respectively.

The mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, highlighted that since June 2023, unemployment has dropped by almost 14% and nearly 2000 residents of Cartagena have found employment. «These data confirm a sustained trend. Unemployment has decreased in all sectors, in all age groups, and cumulatively since January. In addition, the usual spikes after tourist seasons are becoming less pronounced, indicating that employment in the service sector is more stable than it was years ago,» she noted.

The reduction in unemployment has been widespread across sectors. The decline has been particularly notable in services, which decreased by 3.94%, followed by industry (−4.02%), construction (−2.96%), and agriculture (−2.43%). There is also a decrease in the group without previous work experience. By age groups, unemployment has decreased by 3.42% among those under 25, 5.22% among those aged 25 to 44, and 2.42% among those over 45.

Hiring has also improved in June, with 5,943 contracts registered, which is 732 more than in May. Of the total, 2,982 were permanent contracts and 2,961 were temporary. Additionally, the Social Security affiliation data for May indicate that there were 81,074 affiliated workers in Cartagena, 594 more than the previous month (+0.73%) and 1,980 more than in May 2024, representing a year-on-year increase of 2.5%. The number of self-employed workers has also increased, with 83 more registrations than the previous month (+0.73%) and 120 more than a year ago (+1.07%).
