The Mayor of Cartagena has delivered a message of rejection and unity in the face of the water crisis threatening the local economy at the General Assembly of the Confederation of Business Organizations of Cartagena (COEC).

Arroyo, who has reaffirmed the municipal commitment to the region’s development and innovation, has described the situation caused by the threat of cuts to the Transfer as a «real crisis,» warning that in two years the region could receive only a quarter of the necessary water for agriculture.

«That threat should concern us and engage us all, every day, because the entire economy of the region is at risk,» she emphasized, underscoring the need to mobilize and act on all legal and political fronts to «save our agriculture and its fruits in the form of employment, development, and life for our towns.»

The Mayor defended the right to use water to generate prosperity, highlighting the region’s efficiency in its management.

In the same vein, the President of Coec, Ana Correa, also spoke out, reminding that «water is the lifeblood of our fields, our livestock, and industry, and if that water is lost, 40,000 jobs could be affected.»

The Councilor for Business, Employment, and Social Economy, Marisa López, also referred to the defense of the Tajo-Segura Transfer as an «absolutely vital» infrastructure, which is being attacked, she said, for «ideological reasons and without any technical or environmental basis.»

During the annual COEC meeting, which was attended by the President of Croem, the Mayors of San Pedro del Pinatar, San Javier, and La Unión, representatives of the Cartagena corporation, such as the Councilor for Employment, Álvaro Valdés, and spokespeople Jesús Giménez and Manuel Torres, military and academic authorities, and a broad representation of the business sector in the Region, the Mayor of Cartagena addressed farmers and entrepreneurs, ensuring that «we will not leave you alone because this is our issue,» lamenting that «poorly made decisions» are diverting efforts from the region’s major development plans.

Furthermore, Noelia Arroyo dedicated part of her speech to highlighting the joint work between businesses and administrations to define and achieve «great development goals.»

She cited CAETRA as an example, a pioneering alliance between companies and the regional administration in the defense sector, which already brings together 130 companies and has piqued the interest of external investors.

«CAETRA is the future, as is the energy revolution underway in our region,» affirmed the Mayor, seizing the opportunity to reiterate the region’s historical demands for infrastructure, such as connecting the port to the Mediterranean Corridor, fighting against the veto on port expansion, and the arrival of high-speed rail to boost tourism.
