The council of La Palma is going to benefit in the coming months from a municipal investment approaching 900,000 euros that will enable the establishment of a new ecopark, the construction of a new changing room module at the football field, and the comprehensive renovation of an outdoor sports court, included in the Special Plan for the Improvement and Conditioning of Outdoor Sports Courts in the Municipal Area of Cartagena.

The mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, accompanied by the District Councilor, Álvaro Valdés, and the President of the Municipal Board, Antonio Pérez, has visited the sites of the ecopark and sports court, which will enhance services for the residents of the District and also the surrounding areas, adding to other investments from 2024 such as the comprehensive renovation of Plaza Manuel Zamora.

«We are making a significant commitment to our neighborhoods and districts, through the Districts, Municipal Boards, and also from strategic departments like Infrastructure and Sports,» Arroyo said, emphasizing that «the goal is that by the end of the term, we have improved services throughout the municipality and that we continue to enhance the lives of the residents of Cartagena, whether they live in the city center, a neighborhood, or a district.»

Of the three new projects for La Palma, the Ecopark, funded by NextGenerationEU, will be built in the La Palma Industrial Estate and has been awarded at 472,323 euros (including VAT). The municipal plot, accessed via Olive Street, covers an area of 1,322 square meters. The facility will also serve Pozo Estrecho, El Albujón, and Miranda.

This ecopark, which must be built within a 4-month period after the site layout, is designed to manage domestic and commercial waste from the hamlets, facilitate the voluntary deposit of waste and its transfer to authorized handlers, and complement the existing clean points and mobile ecoparks in the municipality.

The new facility will feature open metal containers for pruning residues and other vegetative waste, construction and demolition waste, bulky items, metals and scrap, and reserves, as well as two closed metal containers for electrical and electronic waste, in addition to a service building, toilets, and a small workshop.

Furthermore, the mayor highlighted that through the Neighborhoods and Districts Plan, La Palma will have new changing rooms at the Municipal Football Field. This project is valued at 354,448 euros and will provide the sports facility with the necessary architectural and technical conditions to meet its current habitability and health requirements. Specifically, it includes a 75-square-meter changing room module for players and referees and coaches, as well as a 32-square-meter storage module and a 76-square-meter one with a canteen, public toilets, and an office.

In addition to this investment, there is the complete rehabilitation of the outdoor sports court next to the CEIP Santa Florentina. The project is part of the first set of actions in the Municipal Plan, alongside five others. The planned investment in this court is 32,151.77 euros and includes a new fence, equipment, pavement, and lighting, following a set model that will standardize this type of court throughout the municipality.

The mayor emphasized the importance of these projects for La Palma, especially those in the sports sector, «to ensure that all children and young people in the district have easier access to sports.»

She also recalled that the previous year, the Manuel Zamora Square was completely renovated, transforming it into a unique platform space, fully accessible, more comfortable, and welcoming for residents.
