The image of the Virgen de la Piedad will take the Holy Week of Cartagena to all of Spain through the 5 million coupons from ONCE that have been put up for sale for the draw this Holy Monday, April 14, an initiative of the social group ONCE in collaboration with the City Council and the group of Portapasos de la Piedad, in the midst of celebrating the centenary of the arrival of the sculptural figure to the city.

“Just a few months ago, in October, Cartagena was the protagonist of another coupon due to the election of the Cartagena City Council as the National Disability Award «Reina Letizia» for Accessibility in Municipalities, on March 28, the ONCE Cuponazo left 7.6 million euros in Cartagena, and hopefully for the next Holy Monday, in addition to commemorating this anniversary, luck smiles on the people of Cartagena and this coupon brings some joy to residents and visitors,” explained the mayor, Noelia Arroyo, during the presentation of the coupon, an event in which she was accompanied by the ONCE delegate in the Region of Murcia, Juan Carlos Morejón; José Javier Inglés, representing the group of Portapasos de La Piedad; and the Head of the Marraja Brotherhood, Francisco Pagán.

For Juan Carlos Morejón, the collaboration of the ONCE with major events in the city is unavoidable, “we contribute our small part to ensure that Holy Week in Cartagena reaches all of Spain through 20,674 vendors, all of them with disabilities.”

This milestone adds to the program of events that are taking place in honor of the centenary, such as the procession last Sunday, where the Virgen de la Piedad walked the streets of the city center with an extraordinary departure from the train station to the church of Santa María, as it did in 1925.

In addition, the ‘Promesa’ march, composed by José Alberto Pina to commemorate this milestone, has been premiered, and there are still events for this Holy Monday. At noon, the new towel with the shields of Cartagena, the Marraja Brotherhood, and the two pious groups embroidered will be blessed and placed on the Cross; at 6:00 p.m., there will be a Field Mass on the ramp of Santa María, and at 9:00 p.m., the Procession of the Promises will take place.

The mayor thanked the ONCE for deciding to dedicate one of its coupons to this anniversary, “it is an extraordinary recognition, which not only gives immense visibility to our Piedad and our Holy Week, but also emphasizes the cultural and sentimental importance it has for Cartagena.”

The coupon can be purchased from some of the 460 people who are part of the ONCE in Cartagena and through the website juegosonce.es
