Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Sara Rubira highlighted these data in Totana during the start of the table grape harvesting campaign, where she met with the main regional producers and with Apoexpa president Joaquín Gómez.
«It is one of the star products of the field in the Region of Murcia, of excellent quality and taste, and highly demanded in its seedless variety, a result of the research work of the Murcian Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Research and Development, Imida,» explained the minister.
During this campaign, there has been a slight increase in the area, reaching 7,452 hectares. The estimated harvest is 236,705 tons, 1.5 percent more than in 2024, provided that the weather conditions are favorable.
In addition, the Region of Murcia is the most important autonomous community in terms of the registration of parcels and warehouses authorized for grape export to the People’s Republic of China. There are more than 860 registered parcels, with a combined area of 1,561 hectares, accounting for 25 percent of the total regional area and an estimated production of 57 million kilograms.
Research and development of new varieties
Imida, in collaboration with the Murcian Society for Research and Technology of Table Grapes (Itum), has developed 20 new seedless table grape varieties, driven by the regional government.
These varieties stand out for their excellent quality and very crispy texture, better adaptation to current climatic conditions, economic profitability for producers, absence of seeds (seedless), early or late ripening to extend the production calendar, low demand for cultivation techniques, high productivity, with good cluster and berry size, good organoleptic quality, and resistance to handling and transportation.
In the Region, these new varieties have been planted on more than 1,400 hectares. Globally, these grapes are grown in 11 countries on five continents, totaling more than 2,000 hectares in production, and meet the highest quality standards required by international markets.
