The president of the Community, Fernando López Miras, announced today that the Community «will hire more than 6,000 professionals to ensure healthcare in all parts of the Region this summer, allocating 35 million euros for this purpose.» This measure is part of the special summer healthcare plan to cover vacations and reinforce the areas with the highest influx during the summer months.
López Miras revealed this new staff addition during the closing of the presentation event of the activities program on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Reina Sofía University General Hospital in Murcia and the 500th anniversary of the General Hospital of Murcia.
In this context, he detailed that «we will continue to ensure that our healthcare professionals have the necessary resources to carry out their work as they do. They are a pride for the entire Region and society, and therefore, we must make every necessary effort, despite being the worst funded region in Spain, to maintain its healthcare.»
Among these more than 6,000 appointments offered to cover vacations and leave of absence for staff in healthcare centers, approximately 200 will be specialists, and more than 4,000 will be non-specialist healthcare personnel, of which around 2,000 are nurses and more than 2,000 are from other categories such as nursing care technicians, midwives, physiotherapists, or radiology technicians, among others.
Additionally, around 1,800 professionals in various non-healthcare categories, such as administrative assistants or administrative staff, will be incorporated. This deployment of human and material resources in all healthcare areas is aimed at ensuring healthcare during the holiday season and providing a unique reinforcement in areas where the population grows significantly in summer.
The special healthcare service will be operational until September 30, reorganizing assistance to meet new needs and the increase in demand for care due to population movements to coastal or inland areas, and it foresees the opening of clinics and points for population care in summer, as has been done in previous years.
Despite the shortage of specialists throughout Spain, the Murcian Health Service has organized the summer schedule, as it does every year, to continue providing good healthcare coverage, thanks to the support of its professionals. All necessary resources are made available to ensure care for all citizens of the Region and those who visit during the summer months.
Reina Sofía Anniversary
In reference to the anniversary of Reina Sofía, López Miras emphasized that since its opening in 2005, the center has stood out as a national benchmark for its innovation, quality certifications, and pioneering units, placing it at the forefront of regional public healthcare.
In the words of the regional head of government, «from its foundation in the 16th century to its transformation into the modern Reina Sofía, this hospital has witnessed the evolution of Medicine in the Region of Murcia. The current building, heir to the first General Hospital, symbolizes the fusion of tradition and innovation.»
During the event, the president announced that «Former Queen Doña Sofía will visit Murcia on November 27 to put the finishing touch on the various events organized throughout the year at the hospital that bears her name, as she did 20 years ago for its inauguration.»
Highlighted Units
Over these two decades, Reina Sofía has become a Reference Center (CSUR) in ocular surface and was a pioneer in the Region in using robotic surgery to perform the first prostate cancer intervention.
Thanks to the work of its professionals, its Hospital Detoxification Units, Eating Disorder Units, Inflammatory Bowel Disease Units, as well as its Allergology, Traumatology, Pharmacy, and Otorhinolaryngology Services have become national benchmarks.
The hospital’s surgical activity speaks volumes: last year, 13,615 surgical interventions were performed, with an average of 37.20 surgical interventions per day. The Hospital Detoxification Unit, for treating patients with addictive behaviors, as well as the Eating Disorder Unit, both regional references, also play a significant role.
More than 200,000 Inhabitants
Health Area VII-Murcia East, whose reference hospital is Reina Sofía, has a total population of 212,060 inhabitants. The hospital has 375 installed beds and has 12 operating rooms with 18 anesthesia towers, 75 specialist consultations, 12 ultrasounds in various services, 2 MRI machines, 2 computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanners, 1 mammography machine, and 1 angiography machine, 61 invasive mechanical ventilation respirators, and 31 hemodialysis machines, among other equipment.
As part of the events scheduled for this anniversary, the XVIII Nursing Day will be celebrated in June: «Artificial Intelligence and e-Health applied to Nursing Care» and the seminar «Salus in periculis. The healthcare world as a subject of historical research.»
The planned activities include the presentation of the book «The Origins of the General Hospital of Murcia» and the celebration of a roundtable on the subject, as well as a permanent exhibition of its history in the entrance hall of Reina Sofía with old photos, drawings, manuscripts, and transcriptions.
