Cartagena concludes this May 16th the technical session for professionals on intervention in traffic accidents, which brings together more than 200 firefighters and healthcare professionals from all over Spain in the city. Different rescue exercises and demonstrations are displayed at the port, open to the public on the waterfront, next to Héroes de Cavite and Santiago de Cuba Square.

«Cartagena is in the spotlight these days to demonstrate the capabilities of the Rescue and Salvage Service of the Cartagena City Council; with highly skilled personnel, always ready to meet the needs of citizens,» explained the Councilor for Citizen Security, José Ramón Llorca, at the opening of this event organized by the Professional Association of Traffic Accident Rescue (APRAT).

The Cartagena City Council participates in these rescue sessions with a team of Firefighters, whose maneuvers will be evaluated by experts. The best teams will participate in an international meeting in Croatia on this subject. The aim is to update and advance in action protocols, in order to put them into practice in emergency situations.

35 TRAFFIC RESCUES IN CARTAGENA LAST YEAR

In 2024, the Firefighters of the Cartagena City Council carried out 35 rescues in traffic accidents. However, their rescue tasks go beyond vehicle accidents, also attending 28 mountain rescues and 8 sea rescues last year.

The National Traffic Accident Rescue Meeting will involve teams consisting of six members: a commander, a healthcare professional, and four technicians. Each team will perform two rescue maneuvers, evaluated according to the guidelines of the World Rescue Organization (WRO). These maneuvers, named Indeterminate 1 and Indeterminate 2, will simulate traffic accidents with trapped victims and different levels of clinical stability. Those interested in seeing firsthand how this emergency and rescue personnel work can approach the port waterfront, next to Héroes de Cavite. Rescues take place from 2 p.m. on Wednesday; and from 8 a.m. throughout Thursday and Friday morning.

Additionally, the National Trauma Meeting will run parallel, offering a platform for training and updating in initial trauma assistance techniques. Participating teams will perform a standard maneuver in a simulated scenario, with a victim who has suffered an accident. Participants will be evaluated by expert advisors according to international WRO standards.

The top-ranked teams will have the opportunity to represent APRAT in the World Rescue Challenge, with APRAT covering registration expenses for the top finishers.

The choice of Cartagena as the venue for this prestigious event highlights the city’s commitment to training and excellence in emergency response. For more information, APRAT:
