The old San Francisco Javier school will become a modern space for the associative fabric of Cartagena, where a dozen entities will share headquarters. This building, previously unused, is undergoing rehabilitation to accommodate local associations and improve the efficiency of municipal resources, as explained during a visit to the works by the Mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo.

The mayor emphasized that the project will allow the revitalization of the Los Barreros neighborhood and provide entities with a modern, sustainable, and accessible environment. The intervention includes the rehabilitation of 727.07 m2 spread over two floors, with nine multipurpose classrooms, adapted bathrooms, an elevator, common areas, a green roof, and improvements in energy efficiency.

The mayor highlighted the importance of bringing together entities with complementary objectives in the same building. «This space will not only offer headquarters to the associations but will also facilitate mutual support among them. They will share spaces and resources, making municipal support more efficient and fostering closer collaboration on joint projects,» she said.

In the coming months, the City Council will select the entities that will occupy the Association Hotel after interviewing the sector’s collectives. Priority will be given to associations that currently lack a social space or have one in inadequate conditions.

The works, with a total budget of €1,325,077.36 (awarded at €1,247,692.84), have reached 50% completion. The installation of partition walls, cladding of the facade with heat-treated wood, electrical pre-installations, and part of the plumbing have already been completed. Completion is scheduled for next July.

This is an investment within the Program for Boosting the Rehabilitation of Public Buildings in Communities and Autonomous Cities (Autonomous PIREP), which has 4 million euros and also includes the projects of Casa Rubio and the former Hotel Peninsular, now designated for the Center 2 of Social Services and the Local Police detachment in the historic center.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY

The building’s rehabilitation is based on three fundamental pillars, as explained by the architect from Meii Estudio, the project’s awardee, José María Mateo, «sustainability, inclusion, and beauty, elements that also represent the new European Bauhaus.»

The property features a ventilated wooden facade «that provides optimal insulation within the building, and also includes other passive strategies such as a green roof, or a solar chimney developed at the rear of the building, in addition to the removal of asbestos from previous infrastructures.»

In terms of inclusion and accessibility, actions such as the installation of an elevator, restructured bathrooms, and flexible classrooms that adapt to the needs of collectives have been planned. Regarding the third pillar, beauty, «because it’s not just about revitalizing the building itself, but its entire surroundings, the Los Barreros neighborhood and Cartagena Norte,» Mateo added.
