The Cartagena Piensa program has prepared for this week, in its section A pie de calle, a series of conversations that will bring reflections on democracy, Europe, untamed writing, and reality manipulation to the table.

Participating in these conversations are journalists, writers, and thinkers such as Cristina Monge, Andrea Rizzi, Manuel Rivas, Javier Morales, Rosa Montero, and Laura G. de la Rivera.

These events will take place at Jos� Mar�a Art�s square, at 7:00 pm.

On Tuesday, June 3, ‘Civil society in the age of revenge’. Conversation between Cristina Monge and Andrea Rizzi, with the presentation of Daniela S. Valencia, political communication consultant, director of Vibrante Comunicaci�n.
�
The world is entering a new turbulent era full of risks for Europe. In this scenario, protecting democracy, rights, and the independence of European countries requires major changes.
�
Cristina Monge holds a degree in Political Science and Sociology and a doctorate from the University of Zaragoza. Her areas of interest include sustainability and democratic quality, especially governance for ecological transition, topics she works on in research centers such as Globernance, BC3, Atelier ITD Foundation, or on the boards of Ecodes, Fundesplai, and AVANZA Foundation. She teaches at the Complutense University of Madrid and the AP Institute, and since 2020 she has been the president of the “M�s Democracia” association.

Andrea Rizzi is the Global Affairs correspondent at El Pa�s, where she also writes an opinion column dedicated to Europe. She is a member of the editorial committee of the newspaper, where she previously served as Chief International Editor and Deputy Director in charge of Opinion.

On Wednesday, June 4, ‘Untamed writing’. Conversation between Manuel Rivas and Javier Morales. Presented by Patricio Hern�ndez, a member of the Cartagena Piensa organizing group.

Untamed writing, in the words of poet Mary Oliver, is that which seeks to give voice to the other beings that share life on Earth with us. Based on their latest works, writers Manuel Rivas, National Literature Prize 2024, and Javier Morales will discuss the need for literature that is not indifferent to the eco-social crisis we are experiencing.
�
Manuel Rivas is a Galician writer and journalist who writes in both Galician and Spanish, with a long and recognized body of work in various genres (poetry, narrative, essay, or theater) in both languages.
�
In 2022, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Fine Arts Merit, and in 2024 he received the National Literature Prize, among many other awards including the National Narrative Prize or the Critics’ Prize.
�
Many of his works have been adapted into films. He also has a long history as an activist and individual with social and environmental commitments. He was a founding member of Greenpeace in Spain, where he held executive positions for several years.
�
During the Prestige disaster, he participated in the creation of the citizen platform Nunca M�s.
�
Javier Morales is a storyteller, journalist, and creative writing professor. Author of novels, essays, and short story collections that give voice to rivers, animals, and plants. His latest titles include The Burger that Devoured the World (Plaza y Vald�s) and Writing the Earth (Tres Hermanas).

On Thursday, June 5, ‘Algorithms, humans, and other beasts’. Conversation between Rosa Montero and Laura G. de Rivera. Presented by Gabriel Navarro, a doctor in Psychology and a member of the Cartagena Piensa organizing group.
�
The discussion will be based on common themes that can be deduced from the contents and development of the novel «Difficult Animals» and the analyses and reflections of the informative essay «Slaves of the Algorithm.» They will discuss the recent changes and technological advances in algorithms and artificial intelligence, their impact on ideas and ways of conceiving our existence, and the trends observed regarding their effect on culture, human relationships, and democratic societies.

Rosa Montero. Graduated in journalism. Since 1977 she has worked for the newspaper El Pa�s. Her latest novels are La buena suerte (2020), El peligro de estar cuerda (2022), and Animales dif�ciles (2025). National Journalism Award (1980), National Literature Award (2017), Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (2022), Officer of Arts and Letters of the French Republic (2024). Her books have been translated into nearly thirty languages.

Laura G. De Rivera. Journalist and author of Slaves of the Algorithm. Manual of Resistance in the Era of Artificial Intelligence (Debate, 2025). Specialized in nature, freedom, and civil rights on the internet, she writes for media outlets such as El Pa�s, Muy Interesante, Agencia SINC, or P�blico. Boehringer-Ingelheim Award 2022, Fot�n-CSIC 2022, Prismas Casa de las Ciencias Award 2020, Accenture Award 2020, CASE Platinum Awards Latin America 2019, ESET 2018.
