With the 15 educational centers in Cartagena where over 7,000 m2 of asbestos have already been removed, five more schools will be added by the end of the year where the Autonomous Community will invest €1.3 million, so that by the end of 2025, “we will have practically a 70% completion of the asbestos removal plan, which includes 32 schools in Cartagena, and will continue to progress until the end of 2027,” explained the mayor, Noelia Arroyo.

Within the Energy Efficiency and Bioclimatic Conversion Plan, roofs will be replaced and solar panels installed in the Santiago Apóstol (Miranda), San Félix, Gabriela Mistral (Barriada Hispanoamérica), Luis Vives (El Albuñón), and San Cristóbal (El Bohío) schools, where thermal insulation and energy efficiency will be improved, promoting self-consumption.

The mayor announced this during her visit on Monday, April 28, along with the Educational Counselor, Víctor Marín, at the CEIP La Asomada where the roof replacement works are being finalized, with an investment of €340,000. Arroyo announced that the City Council, through the Department of Education, has carried out one of the actions requested by the center, such as improving the bathrooms on the ground floor of the main building, “we have carried out that action which is already completed for an amount of €75,000, as part of the adaptation works that we also carry out in different centers.”

The works at CEIP La Asomada began in December, during the Christmas holidays, and the work was carried out alongside the teaching activity. In this center, 671 square meters of roofs have been replaced and photovoltaic panels have been installed with an investment that has exceeded €340,000, funded 60% by European Feder funds.

Marín explained that “the roof replacement helps reduce the temperature inside educational centers by up to eight degrees, improves thermal insulation, and can reduce the electricity bill by up to 30 percent.”

New Maintenance Contract

In May, the new maintenance contract in the schools of the municipality will come into effect, a contract that, according to the mayor, “will involve mobilizing more budget, exceeding €1 million, and will bring very important novelties such as the renovation of indoor sports courts or the creation of shaded areas, both with awnings and trees.”

As the mayor anticipated, “there will be a schedule from the Department of Education with the different centers, depending on the works that need to be carried out, to always do it during vacation periods.”
