The Cartagena City Council has taken a new step in its commitment to the agricultural sector of the municipality by holding a strategic meeting to advance in the protection of the Early Potato from Campo de Cartagena through the future application for a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). Although the Council does not have direct competencies in this matter, it is acting as a driver and promoter of this initiative, aware of the value and uniqueness of this traditional crop from Campo de Cartagena.

The meeting, chaired by the Councilor of Agriculture, José Ramón Llorca, has had the participation of technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture, a professor from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), a member of the PGI Operations Group, as well as farmers, producers, representatives from the Asaja and COAG unions, the president of the Municipal Board of La Puebla, and staff from the Municipal Agricultural Assistance Point.

During the meeting, the first steps were established to advance in the recognition of the Early Potato from Campo de Cartagena, which is grown in around 6,000 hectares between La Puebla and El Algar, in one of the most technologically advanced areas of regional agriculture. The agreed measures include the creation of a Potato Producers Association, the promotion of the Potato Festival as an event to showcase the product, and active participation in sector fairs to promote its commercialization and showcase its quality outside the municipality.

“The Early Potato from Campo de Cartagena is not only a product of excellent quality, but also a symbol of our countryside and our people. From the City Council, we want to defend it against market threats and bet on its future with tools like the PGI,” declared Councilor José Ramón Llorca, who pointed out that Cartagena is part of the Potato Producing Municipalities Association and that the municipality has a monument dedicated to this tuber in La Puebla, a testament to the rootedness of this crop in the area.

The Cartagena City Council thus reaffirms its support for farmers and its willingness to act as a catalyst for the Early Potato from Campo de Cartagena to receive the recognition it deserves for its quality, history, and contribution to the economic and social development of rural areas.
