Cartagena has hosted the first event of the SPARTARIA entrepreneurship program, organized this April by CETENMA with the support of the Local Development and Employment Agency (ADLE) of the Cartagena City Council and in collaboration with project partners ANSE and the General Directorate of Natural Environment.

The inaugural day brought together 25 entrepreneurs with the aim of inspiring and guiding the development of projects focused on sustainable use of the region’s forest resources. The event was attended by the councilor for Employment, Training, and Contracting, lvaro Valds, who emphasized the significance of entrepreneurship in rural areas and the importance of sustainable management of natural resources: «It is essential to promote initiatives that allow entrepreneurs to find new opportunities in our natural environment, generating wealth and employment in a responsible, efficient, and environmentally friendly manner.»

The event, held at the Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Development, featured a round table with successful examples of rural entrepreneurship, such as BIOGREEN with its innovative water retainer for agriculture; Espacio Colibr, a business model focused on welfare in natural environments; and an exciting project of 3D printing using natural and durable fibers like esparto for construction materials.

During the day, entrepreneurs worked in teams, guided by an expert, resulting in the formulation of four promising ideas: an organic food for worms that in turn produces food for chickens; a space dedicated to activities in nature; a machine for producing wood fuel from branches; and a training and lifestyle center focused on connecting with the natural environment.

This initial meeting highlights, according to Valds, «the importance of a solid strategic planning in rural entrepreneurship, emphasizing that the success of a project goes beyond the initial idea and requires a professional approach in designing the business model, financial plan, and product development.»

The SPARTARIA training program now continues with a second mentoring phase, running until May 8, aimed at helping participants transform their ideas into viable business models. The culmination of this process will take place on May 8, when entrepreneurs will present their projects to a jury, demonstrating the feasibility and potential impact of their innovative proposals.

The SPARTARIA project is supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded by the European Union (Next Generation EU), with the main objective of enhancing the climate and dryland flora of the Cartagena area.
