Cartagena has fired this Sunday, April 27, a historic and record-breaking masclet before burning a Valencian falla in the port tonight. The composition launched by Pirotecnia Nadal-Mart de L’Ollera is one of the most gunpowder-intensive ones ever fired. It detonated 350 kilos of gunpowder, almost three times more than what is usually set off in the Ayuntamiento square in Valencia during the Fallas, given the size of the space where it was launched, the Cuesta del Batel in Cartagena. Artifacts of caliber 75 and over 2,500 truenos of 50, among others, were detonated.

The Councilor for Tourism, Beatriz Snchez, did not want to miss this masclet, which has served as a tribute and show of solidarity to the inhabitants of all the municipalities affected by the Valencia dana that occurred six months ago. The roar of the gunpowder fired in Cartagena has also been a voice of solidarity and hope. In addition, in memory of the victims, 75 salvos were fired before it started.

The pyrotechnic show led by the brothers from Vall d’Albaida in Valencia, Jos Vicente and Diego Nadal-Mart, has moved the numerous Fallas enthusiasts and Cartagena locals gathered in the vicinity of the Cuesta del Batel in Cartagena. In the final moments, aerial and ground detonations followed, culminating in the ignition of around 8,000 masclets or firecrackers in the last thirty seconds of the earthquake-like masclet that lasted about 7 minutes.

To put this masclet in Cartagena into context, it is worth noting that the same pyrotechnics launched a masclet with 200 kilos of gunpowder in the Valencia City Hall square this year, which was exceptional during the Fallas. This masclet was the culmination of the retirement of the matriarch of this historic pyrotechnic saga from L’Ollera, Nuria Mart. It is also worth mentioning that in the Concurso de Masclets de Castelln last March, a masclet close to 340 kilos set off a record, lower than the one launched on April 27 in Cartagena.

Valencian Moors and Christians, along with the historic festivals of Cartagena, the Carthaginians and Romans, did not want to miss these Fallas of Valencia in Cartagena. Together, they paraded through the port of Cartagena and the Carlos III Wall to witness this pyrotechnic milestone: The masclet experienced in Cartagena is one of the most powerful ever seen to date.

On Friday, the Falleros also showed their gratitude to the municipal Emergency personnel by giving them over fifty portions of paella to thank the Cartagena City Council for their deployment during the Valencia floods. They also distributed a hundred paella dishes to the Hermanitas de los Pobres in Cartagena.

HOTELS FULL UNTIL MONDAY

Thousands of Valencian revelers have filled hotels in Cartagena and La Manga del Mar Menor until Monday, as it is a holiday in Valencia, in these itinerant Fallas that have been celebrated in a different city every year for over a decade. Their visit has an economic impact on Cartagena of around 2 million euros. The Fallera expedition reached its peak with the Offering to the Virgin of the Helpless at the Baslica de la Caridad in Cartagena. The Falleros attended in large numbers as they couldn’t shine in the Offering in their land due to the rain on the day of the festival, which led to a landing in Cartagena of a thousand Falleros dressed in traditional attire for the offering to the Valencian patroness.

BURNING OF THE FALLA TONIGHT AT NIT DEL FOC

However, the Falla landing has brought around 5,000 Valencians to Cartagena. All of them, along with Cartagena locals and visitors, will be able to witness one of the most magical popular festivities of the Fallas of Valencia this Sunday night, the Nit del Foc. Starting at 9:00 PM, there will be a fireworks display in the port. And then, the burning or crem of the falla planted next to the City Hall by the Falla artist Pepe Benavent will take place.

The falla crowned by a Carthaginian warrior on a cup of the typical Cartagena coffee, the Asitico,is one of the main attractions of the fallas of Valencia celebrated in Cartagena. In addition to the warrior and a Roman soldier, the falla displays, among other elements, a reproduction of the submarine Isaac Peral, the famous Cartagena sailor and inventor,as well as a large Roman column and a fallera family. This last set of ninots is a token of gratitude from the Falleros for the help that Cartagena provided to the towns affected by the Valencia floods in 2024.
