The Municipal Government of Cartagena has approved the project for the installation of a visitors’ pavilion that will temporarily allow public access to the Roman Amphitheater during all excavation periods. This project will enable visitors to learn about the archaeological work and the progress in the monument’s restoration.

«Completing the project for the Amphitheater will take us several years, but the visit is already of interest. The combination of the amphitheater and the bullring allows for the enjoyment of history and architecture. We want our visitors to be able to experience the archaeological work, see the progress, and witness how the project is advancing,» explained the mayor, Noelia Arroyo.

The infrastructure, designed by architects Andrs Cnovas and Nicols Maruri, will be located in the open space in front of the autopsy amphitheater to manage access control. It is a light pavilion, with a height that does not exceed the stone base of the autopsy amphitheater to avoid visual interference with neighboring buildings, all of which are of significant importance in the urban context of Cartagena.

The pavilion is designed as a removable structure, primarily constructed with waterproof panels, wood, and metallic elements. This will facilitate its dismantling once all phases of the general Amphitheater and Bullring project are completed. It will include adapted facilities, such as an accessible toilet, sales and storage area, and landscaped spaces.

The mayor explained, «At this moment, there are projects totaling around 3.5 million euros regarding the monument because the phase IV, recently awarded for over 2 million euros, will begin while phase III, paused by technicians to adjust the project due to findings like the fossa bestiaria discovered during excavation, is concluding.»

Currently, archaeologists are carrying out phase III of the project with a budget of 1,000,000 €, co-financed by the 1.5% Cultural program of the MITMA and the Cartagena City Council. This phase includes the archaeological excavation of the grandstand located between the main access axes, the conservation and restoration of 1st-century structures, and the recovery of the exterior sector to the current enclosure of the Bullring. It also involves the excavation of the old Doctor Fleming street to connect exterior and interior remains excavated in the 1960s, establishing an accessible route.

This month, phase IV has been awarded for an amount of 2,332,860 euros, aimed at the comprehensive recovery of the northwestern quadrant of the Amphitheater, the main entrance, and the double ring of the southeastern quadrant of the Bullring. The construction will be carried out by Construcciones Mara Garca Martnez, with an estimated duration of 18 months. Previously, the city council had contracted the project management for 250,000 euros.

These actions are part of the Master Plan for the Roman Amphitheater of Cartagena, designed for the excavation, restoration, and musealization of the site.
